It's a veritable carnival of tye dye delights, in our own little lounge of colorful goodness in the middle of the Mainstrasse Village for Oktoberfest. The Flying Cat and Friends can be found tomorrow (Sunday) from noon-9pm in between the Goose Girl Fountain and the Little Ben at Goebel Park on the middle island, just look for the tye dye tents and the festivities!

Hybrid Moments Opening Night

Our grand re-opening and gallery show was a AMAZING! What a crowd! What a night! The shop looked great, and so did the artwork. Our featured artists, Zach Kestermann & Geri Shields, definitely gave it their all with this exhibition , showing their best work to date. Many thanks need to be given to our co-op members for working tirelessly over the past month to pull the shop back together and give it a wonderful new look in time for the opening!

To add to the opening night festivities, we offered tarot readings and henna. Our henna artists was gracious enough to also do a colorful sidewalk drawing for us for the grand re-opening!

Also, for opening night, The Flying Cat unveiled some amazing new merchandise and our Catterwall, a section of the store dedicated to displaying artwork featuring our favorite four-legged friends, Cats!

If you missed the opening night of Hybrid Moments, don't worry. The show will be up for the remainder of September. We will be open every Wednesday, 3-7pm, and every Saturday, 12-5pm, except for this coming Saturday, Sept. 11. We will be vending at Art in the Park in Bellevue, KY that day, as well as at Oktoberfest in Covington, KY all weekend!

First Friday and New Hours

First Friday is tonight, Sept. 3rd! The shop looks great! Our Hybrid Moments exhibition is up and ready for the doors to open. The First Friday Gallery Opening starts tonight at 6pm. Along with the gallery opening event, we will be offering tarot readings and henna, as well as complimentary brownies, lemon bars, and snickerdoodles! Be sure not to miss it!

The Flying Cat is also adding new OPEN hours starting this month! We will now be open on Wednesdays! Our hours will now be:
WEDNESDAYS: 3pm-7pm
FIRST FRIDAYS: 6pm-10pm
SATURDAYS: 12pm-5pm

This Saturday, Sept. 4th, we will only be open til 4pm, though, so we too can celebrate LABOR DAY!

Hybrid Moments

September 3, 2010 - September 30, 2010

Opening Reception: First Friday, September 3, 2010 6pm - 10pm

After being closed for much of the summer for renovations, The Flying Cat Boutique & Gallery re-opens it's door on September 3, 2010 to present Hybrid Moments, an exhibition by artists Geri Shields and Zach Kestermann. The Show will be on display from September 3, 2010 to September 30, 2010. An opening reception will be held on First Friday, September 3, from 6pm to 10pm. Light refreshments will be provided. The event is free and open to the public.

This exhibition showcases new paintings by Geri shields and Zach Kestermann. Both artists have combined features from various animal species, mythical beings, and a few tidbits of pop culture to create a diverse collection of hybrid creatures.

Geri Shields creates textural paintings of light-hearted, quirky characters engaged in the ordinary tasks of being extraordinary. Her compositions remain uncluttered to emphasize the intimate narratives between beast and environment. She states, "I 'design' my paintings to tell the breadth of a story and the intricacies of relationships with minimal details and little distractions. I want the viewer to focus on the 'moment' captured, not the accessories."

Zach Kestermann compares his pieces to a potato chip, "they are simple, clean, and crisp." Whether they are standing alone against a solid field of color, or precisely integrated into their habitat, his crossbreeds exude a confident humor. They are painted with a steady hand and a strategic use of color. The graphic nature of his approach gives a smooth, almost screen printed look to his paintings.

Both artists graduated from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Geri Shields in 2005 and Zach Kestermann in 2006. They reside in Cincinnati and have shown their artwork in galleries on both sides of the river and beyond. This is their second exhibition at The Flying Cat.

The Flying Cat is a boutique and gallery located in Mainstrasse Village, in Covington, KY. For the past month, the store has been closed for renovations. We have reorganized and reimagined the overall look of the store. Our walls now exhibit a sophisticated new color palate and our shelves house wonderful new handmade goods available for purchase. Our grand re-opening festivities on September 3rd not only include our First Friday Gallery Event. We will also be offering tarot readings and henna.

The Flying Cat sells and exhibits handcrafted work in all media by emerging artists, designers, and crafters. Our gallery exhibitions rotate every month. We are open First Fridays, 6-10pm and every Saturday, 12-5pm.

YES! We will be open for First Friday in September. Our gallery exhibition will feature NEW paintings from Geri Shields and Zach Kestermann. Their cast of hybrid creatures will be on display for the entire month of September. The gallery opening will be Friday, September 3, 6pm-10pm. Of course, tarot readings will be available during our First Friday event. Also, there will be complimentary snacks. MORE PAINTING THIS WEEKEND! Things are coming together nicely. Just 3/4 of one wall left! Then a few touch ups and a couple more coats of sealant on the floor, then we can start getting things back in order. Here's where we are so far...

Painting Party!

The team here at The Flying Cat decided to close the shop for a few weeks to complete some much needed renovation projects. We will re-open in time for the Hybrid Moments show opening on the first Friday in September.

The first thing tackled was taming that floor! Sorry, I don't have pictures of the floor transformation, but I assure you, it looks much better. It is now a glossy black. By the time our to-do list is complete, the floor may need a touch up or two, but for now, it seems to be holding it's own against our wear and tear.

Next, the walls! I do have a few pictures of our painting party. We decided to go with a dark blue for the bottom of the walls and a silvery blue for the top, with the exception of the gallery wall which will remain mostly white with the new dark blue as it's border.

These are all the photos we have right now. The batteries died before we could document more of the progress. We did get much more completed than what is shown, and it looks amazing! More pictures to come soon!
